Addiction Treatment Was the Experience of a Lifetime

Spread the love

Going into addiction treatment I had no idea what to expect. All I knew is that I needed to get some help desperately. Prior to going into addiction treatment I had moved around the country looking for the geographical cure. I continuously told myself, “if I moved I can start fresh and can be able to finally put an end to my addiction.” Of course wherever I moved I would quickly revert back to my old ways of drug addiction and alcohol abuse. After a hard three day binge in Florida, roughly six months after I moved there, I had a moment of clarity. It was early morning and for whatever reasons the drugs and alcohol stopped working. No matter how much I pumped into my system the substances were not getting me drunk or stoned. I started crying and something inside of me was telling me that this was the end of the road. I needed to get help. Less than 12 hours later I was in an addiction treatment center going through the intake process.  I had no idea what to expect. I truly thought that addiction treatment would entail just lying around a detox unit and ridding my body of the toxins that were a result of years of drug and alcohol abuse. If someone told me that I would be working with therapists and other medical professionals daily for the duration of my stay in treatment I would not have believed it. The care that I got during drug rehab was above and beyond what I could have ever imagined. In treatment I was able to process issues in my past that were contributing to my alcohol and drug addiction. My family came in and they too participated in various forms of therapy in a family program so that they could learn what their role was in my addiction and what their role should be in my recovery. While addiction treatment was just the beginning of my recovery it was just what I needed. It was the beginning of a new, improved life for me. Without the help of treatment there is no telling where I would be but I surely would not have the life that I have now.
