Coping with Suicide in Recovery

Spread the love

You spent years numbing yourself from the emotional pain, anger or anxiety. Although you thought using alcohol and drugs was a good way to deal with or rather NOT deal with these feelings, it really wasn’t. Reality showed a completely different picture and it was difficult for everyone around you to watch the chaos. Now that you are in recovery, you have no choice but to face all the feelings you have been running away from. This is an intense but necessary task and might leave you feeling like you’re fighting a losing battle.

5 Tips to Get You Through

Recovery can be overwhelming because of all the feelings you have to address. It might seem impossible to cope with these feelings and it is common for people to feel suicidal during this time. However, it’s important to not lose hope and remember the following tips:

  1. Let people know how you are feeling. Having support from others helps.
  2. Create and sign a safety contract stating that you will not act on your suicidal thoughts. Talk about your feelings instead.
  3. Remember your personal goals and work toward them. You do have a purpose, so don’t forget it.
  4. Engage in activities that bring you joy and brighten your mood, such as volunteering.
  5. If the above tips don’t work, call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255. Someone is there to listen.

This is a difficult time in your life but remember, it’s just a single moment. Don’t let a single moment cut your life short.
