Will You Tell Her About Your Drug Rehab Past?
Drew Barrymore discussed on Oprah how she plans to speak frankly with her baby daughter about alcohol and drug addiction. The former child star definitely has the experience of knowing how difficult life can be when drugs and alcohol are involved. Her well-documented partying behavior began at age 9 and evolved from there. She entered drug rehab at age 13 and again at age 14 after a suicide attempt. Barrymore will be able to give her daughter ample information from experience and encourage her to stay away from substance abuse. She said that she will never make her daughter worry about her where she is the way Barrymore did with her own mother, which may have contributed to her own addictions. Most addicts who are parents are reluctant to go to drug rehab and use their children as an excuse. Most children of addicts want their parents to go to drug rehab and get help. Barrymore understands how important it is for a child to feel safe knowing that their parent is OK. One thing that stood out was when Barrymore told Oprah, “I will absolutely instill in her that you cannot be ashamed of the journey that it took, you know, to get where you are if you are proud of yourself.” All parents in recovery should be proud of who they are and the path it took to get there. Drew Barrymore is another example of someone eliminating addiction from her life and reaping the benefits of doing so. How do you handle addiction conversations with your kids?
