Suffering Addicts Are Only As Sick As Their Secrets

Individuals have a hard time getting free from their addiction because of the secrets that they walk around with. It is not often that you will meet an addict who does not struggle with their past. They are commonly ashamed of how they spent their time in the past,  the actions that they have taken in order to continue to feed their addiction and opportunities and events that their addiction has caused them to miss. Living with regret will keep a person turning back to their alcohol and drug abuse. While it is important for a recovering addict to remember their troubled past it is just as important for them to come to terms with the damage that their addiction caused through addiction treatment. The setting and environment provided in addiction treatment permits individuals to talk openly with therapists in group and individual settings. The expression “we are only as sick as our secrets” goes a long way when it comes to recovering from addiction. If a person is not able to openly talk about their secrets, they will continue to haunt them and hinder their ability to free themselves. Everyone who struggles with drug and alcohol abuse is unique and has different secrets that prevent them from getting sober. Addiction treatment offers the advantage of being able to discuss and process secrets which are essential when it comes to beating the addiction. When individuals verbalize the secrets that they are keeping it makes it impossible for them to ignore them.  The secret becomes real and forces a person to deal with it.
